Harpo and Sofia's relationship developed through other relationships in the book such as the relationship between Harpo and his father. From early on in the novel, readers can see that Harpo and his father do not have a close relationship. Readers can assume that at a young age, Harpo noticed how his father treats woman and decided that when he grew up he was not going to act like his father.
Harpo and Sofia had a happy marriage for three years. However, eventually Harpo came to the conclusion that if he wanted any sort of power in his home, he needed to do something. After advice from his father and Celie, he decided to try to beat Sofia. At this moment, Harpo feels that he needs to follow his father's footsteps in order to acquire control in his home. Unfortunately for him, Sofia fought back. In fact, in an entry in Celie's diary, she described them fighting "...like two mens" (p.38). Harpo's actions towards Sofia mimic Mr._____'s towards Celie. Sofia is one of the few strong female characters in the novel. Harpo thinks he can get away with doing things like beating her but Sofia is too strong for that. Because Sofia is so strong, she didn't let this abuse last.

Sofia soon moves away with their children, hoping that their children will get a better example of a father, so they don't repeat history like Harpo did. Readers soon see the regret that Harpo has because of how he treated Sofia. Harpo realizes what he has done wrong and learned from this experience. Because of this, he matured a lot throughout the novel. Readers can see this maturity level increase when Harpo and Sofia are reunited. Because their love was so strong, it does not take much to get back into the pattern of being in love. At the end of the novel, Harpo and Sofia are shown happy and together.
