Celie's children were taken away from her basically as soon as they were born. For most of her life, she thought that once her father had taken them away from her, they were killed in the forest. Even though they are not physically together, Celie is extremely emotionally attached to her children. She is so attached that one day while walking in town, Celie spots a little girl and is convinced that she is her child. Throughout the novel Celie displays her love for her children as she knows that she is their biological mother.
At the end of the novel, Nettie shows up to Celie's with Celie's children. This encounter symbolizes reunion. Even though Celie always had felt that they shared an emotional relationship, now they can have a physical relationship and have the opportunity to be in each others life.
Even though for most of the novel Celie was not aware that Nettie and her children were together in Africa, the idea of nettie and her children helped her get through everyday.
