Celie and G-d
Celie started writing her letters to G-d after she had her first child. Right after her child was born her father told her, “You better not never tell nobody but G-d. It’d kill your mammy”. This is what gave Celie the idea to start writing letters to G-d and eventually start telling G-d her life story.
Celie feels that he is the only male figure in her life that hasn’t treated her poorly. G-d is the only figure who Celie can openly vent to, she doesn’t talk to anyone else about what goes on inside her head. Toward the middle of the novel she starts writing “dear Nettie” instead of “dear G-d” . One of the reasons why she stops addressing her letters to G-d is because eventually in the novel she starts to hold a grudge against all men and doesn't want anything to do with any of them. At the end of the novel Celie shows through who she addresses her letter to that she isn’t holding anymore grudges on people, men specifically. Readers see this because instead of addressing it to one person/figure she addresses it to many. |
