Celie and Her Father
Celie's father had had a history of treating women poorly. In fact, his wife, Celie's mom, died "sick" as stated in the book. Readers know that this sickness reason was just a cover up for her Father killing her mother.
Ever since she was young, Celie's father treated her poorly. He beated her, and even raped her! The abuse that Celie experienced from her father was the first of many abuses in her life. This abuse in her life really affected her in many ways. Because of the way Celie's father treated her as a young child, Celie started to believe that the way she was treated was okay, even though it was not on any level! He inevitably made celie who she is. He made her into the insecure, shy person who doesn't truly know who she is and can't stand up for herself.
It is well known that Celie's father abuses and rapes her. Since her mom won't even sleep in the same room as him, Celie has unfortunately taken her mother's place. After Celie has just given birth, at the beginning of the novel, her father states “You better not never tell nobody but God. It’d kill your mammy". This inspired Celie's diary to God which was the format for most of the novel. Because of this verbal abuse, Celie was not able to stand up for herself for most of her life and only told God about her life.
